Annette Funicello danced in an amateur show in Fullerton, California in Swan Lake when Walt Disney was introduced to her. It was only 13 at that moment. Her Mickey Mouse Club teammates were angry after Funicello became part of the cast in season 1 of the show and without having to audition. Disney was right to make this decision, as Funicello quickly became the star in The Mickey Mouse Club. Additionally, she wrote her own story of adventure, Adventures in Dairyland. It was soon clear that Funicello required records so that she could maximize her talent as a teenager singer, and even though Annette wasn't very enthusiastic about her ability to sing, Disney engaged established arranger Tutti Camerata to guide her career as an artist on the recording. Funicello ultimately got comfortable with making records and really enjoyed working with Camerata who was one of the very few 40-something arrangers that had access to the essential foundations of rock music. Annette Sings Anka markedly improved her albums, starting from the third. It is believed to be the first album that featured the works of rock writers as a repertoire. Funicello was co-starring with Frankie Avalon in Beach Party. This was the first of a string of films about beach parties that became immensely famous. The scripts for each of the films were given a personal read-through and approval by Walt Disney so as to safeguard Annette's image.
